Research & Planning: Digipak Analysis (David)
Advantages
Shows the CD in a presentable way, selling it more than just a CD in a case, offering a second inside slot that can hold lyrics, or a band profile depending on the preference of the artist. Moreover, it has more to offer the customer than a simple CD case, therefore could tempt people to buy it rather than download it straight.
Another advantage is that digipaks can generate more publicity for a new artist as people will want to know more about them especially if they are new to the mainstream.
Disadvantages
A disadvantage is that because the template is quite small in comparison to other digipaks therefore it could mean that people might not buy it as it doesn't offer as much. Moreover as it is small this means that it cant offer as much as there isn't as many pockets in the inside of the digipak.
Another disadvantage of a digipak is that they cost more and might not make profits as they are competing against online downloads. Therefore everything that is offered in the digipak can be found online for free, for example lyrics or band photos and especially tour dates.
A larger Template offering more to customers |
Advantages
Gives the customer more of an insensitive to buy the digipak as it has more to offer. For example some digipaks offer band posters or lyric sheets and because the digipak is larger it can have both instead of a one or the other.
This is an example of a full digipak. As you can see in Micheal Jackson's "This is it" there is more available including a poster, lyrics as well as lots of photos. This album digipak is special as it was released after his death, therefore there is more inside to try and get people to buy it, also there is an market to sell too, as people wanted to buy his last album so everything inside the digipak is just extra.
Another advantage of the large digipak is that it can hold more information. such as tour dates and locations which might not fit onto one small panel in a small digipak.
Disadvantages
However there are some disadvantages to having a large digipak, one is trying to fill all the panels. It will be harder for a smaller artist to try and fill all the space in a large digipak if it is their first album, therefore most new artist will go for the smaller digipak.
The 1975's first album "1975" was their first release therefore they didn't need to use a large digipak, This meant that they used a smaller simple one that had the CD and a list of the songs. This is a good example of showing how using smaller digipaks can work better for new artists.
My choice
I have come to the conclusion after researching both templates available the 4 and 6 panel, that i would use a 4 panel template for my digipak if i was an unsigned artist. this is because as an unsigned artist it is going to be harder for me to fill all 6 panels. People who buy the album are going to be doing it more for the music as that's all they would know about me. this allows me to just put the song list and maybe the lyrics to the songs. Another reason i would use the 4 panel digipak is that as an unsigned artist i would want to save as much money as possible, therefore spending money on create a poster is going to waste money that i may not make back depending on sales.
However i know by choosing the 4 panel i am missing out on the opportunity to get more information about me to my audience however i feel that the benefits of the costing and the time consumption the 4 panel is a better choice for an unsigned artist.
Furthermore I refer a simple design to albums therefore my personal preference is the 4 panel as it is straight forward and doesnt have too much going on, this would work well with my idea of having a simple sunset as the ablum cover as it means I can have a plain black inside with white writing.
An example of the artwork I'd use for my cover. |

Research & Planning - Digipak analysis
Digipak Analysis
What is a Digipak?
The popularity of digipaks came about in the early 200s amongst recoding artists and record labels. A digipak is used by recorded labels to promote sales on a particular artist or band similarly to a music video as it is aimed to advertise and 'sell' the artist.
The main purpose of a digipak is to give the customer/ fan something physical with a variety of features which they can keep as oppose to downloading the song or album through the internet, a digipak offers more features (bands/artists tour dates, songs within the disc and background content on the artist) than just the music itself.
Some generic features of a digipak are:
- Hard copy of the CD
- Photos and content detailing the artist/band
- Lyric book
How does a digipak benefit the artist?
The front of the digipak will have some aspect of what the artist represents and what their predominate genre is. The digipak will most likely embody the theme and a message about the artists' image. This links to emphasising the artist as a brand image which increases their popularity.
Digipaks benefit the artist as its promotional aspect of the music industry which helps bring awareness to the artist thus selling the artist and encouraging consumers to buy and listen to their music. If anything a digipak establishes your loyalty to your artist similar to a vinyl record.
Example 1
This is an example of a standard Digipak template, a digipak is a patented style of CD or DVD packaging.
Advantage
- An advantage of this particular digipak is that its very presentable and offers a wide range of features that comes with the album; perhaps a poster or a mini booklet containing information and lyrics of the album. More packaging such as this one gives more room for the artist or band to promote themselves.
- Digipaks are made more environmentally friendly than jewel cases because they can be made of recycled paper - However, they aren't always made this way.
Disadvantage
- A disadvantage is that now a days it may be out of date as many consumers download albums online via itunes and therefore rarely purchase digipaks.
- Digipak's will show more wear and tear than a jewel case therefore isn't durable.
Example 2
Advantage
- This particular digipak is efficient for consumers who just want the basic features of an album which is the hard copy and the booklet. It uses less materials than the first one and can be made in large quantities. It is efficient in storage.
- Digipak's don't crack as easily as jewel cases do, but they will rip and eventually the paper begins to peel apart and separate.
Disadvantage
- The trays in the digipaks break much more often than in jewel cases. There's not as much protection since the outer portion is made of paper, so the teeth that hold the CD in place crack and fall out easily.
After looking at the possible digipaks available and evaluating their strength and weaknesses, I've come to the conclusion that I would be using a 6 panel digipak because unlike the 4 panel, the 6 panel allows us to insert much more features on the artist e.g. tour dates and signed song books which therefore further promotes them. However a drawback in using a 6 panel in terms of it being used by an unsigned artist is that there is only a limited amount of features we can include as they aren't as well known so it'd a waste of time trying to fill in the space left over.
Research & Planning: Music Video Analysis - My Love (Jodie)
Rowan Tyler Jones (born 6 December 1993), known by his stage name Route 94, is a British music producer and DJ from London. Formerly producing dubstep as Dream, Jones has worked with the likes of Skream and Katy B. He now produces house and his single "My Love" has been a commercial success and has charted to number 1 in three countries.
Route 94 - My Love
What genre is the music and how is it reflected in the video?
The genre of the song is house, this is clearly shown in the video as it is set in a club and contains lots of dancing. House music is often associated with the rave culture, in the video people are seen to be taking pills and drinking, this is very common in house genre videos.
How do the images relate to the lyrics?
"My love and my touch up above, made with the warmth of my" = She runs the mind games on him when with her touch, fooling him. However, it seems she gets as good as she gives. At the same time, it seems that this relationship is truly electrifying – even comparing to heaven.
The lyrics talk of touch and being close to each other, in the video the main couple are seen to be infatuated with each other, not being able to pull apart from the touching and kissing. Also, the aspect of touch and warmth is interesting as the video was shot using was the Flir SC8200 – a science-grade thermal imaging camera, differentiating the video and saying their body heat.
How do the images relate to the music?
During the dancing scenes the people are dancing in time to the music, the music at this point has a soft beat as the people dance seductively with each other. Also, the main male person is falling a girl, referring to his trying to find love.
How is the artist presented to 'sell' them? How important are close ups?
The artist is rarely known in the video but this conforms to the conventions of house music, they are djs so are usually out of sight, focusing on making the music. The video focuses on the club atmosphere, inviting people to get involved and dance to the music.
Is there any reference to 'looking'? Are female presented voyeuristically?
The video includes several females dancing seductively and looking drunk and high, being very sexual. The main people are also seen kissing and becoming very affectionate as they go back into the toilet area to be alone together. The boy is seen to be looking for the guy, clearly attracted to her.
Can you spot any intertextual references? What are they? Is there a narrative?
Similar to “White Noise”, this relationship seems to be one with a lot of mind games and messing around. It follows a young man (Jon Fleming) as he enters a club, dances with a young woman (Lorena Fain), leaves with her, they embrace in the rain and later at her house it is implied that they have sex.
One interesting point in the shoot was when the shot a wide shot of the club from a balcony overlooking the dance floor. They didn’t have enough extras to completely fill in the crowd, so we instead planned to shoot the crowd in sections and composite them together, similar to how the DC reflecting pool crowd shot in Forrest Gump was created.

Research & Planning- Digipack Template Analysis (Ciara)
- A digipack is a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs.
Here is one example of a digipack, used to demonstrate the key features needed to sell a CD. These features include the album cover, the back and the extra aspects in the inside.
Pros:
- Simple, yet eye catching design which makes it suitable for a large majority of audiences
- Has a clear front, which would be used to illustrate the album cover clearly
- As well as having a front and a back, it also includes an inside sleeve, which can be used to place an photo or perhaps a booklet of the lyrics
- In general, using a digipack creates more publicity than only producing a downloadable version, as it is visible to the eye and is available in more wide spread places (i.e. high street shops as well as online)
Cons:
- Due to it being quite simple, other digipacks might surpass it therefore be less catching to the audience. For instance, other digipack's may include more features such as a band profile as well as lyrics
- As it is smaller, therefore has less to offer, people are less likely to buy it, meaning the money spent on making a digipack would not make a substantial profit
Here is a second, and more advanced example of a digipack, which is more likely to be used for more popular artists and bands, due to their larger mass audience
Pros:
- This digipack would draw the audiences attention more and give them more of a reason to buy it, as it has more to offer
- Due to the larger space, this digipack has the option to include exclusives that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else such as signed posters or lyric sheets
- In addition, a bigger digipack means you can pack more information into it, such as tour dates and new releases, which would not be possible for a smaller scale digipack
Cons:
- Although having a larger digipack is extremely beneficial it does come at a cost. Producing a larger scale digipack will cost more money, because more sheets need to be filled
- Furthermore, it can also be hard sometimes to find something useful to fill all of the sheets. For example, not very well known artists would find it hard to fill all of the sheets on a large digipack, therefore they are likely to stick to small scale ones

What is a Digipak?
A type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs."Digipak" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging. They were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-pak, is trademarked.
STANDARD DIGI PAK TEMPLATE
PROS
- Although it is a basic design the layout still allows all the necessary information to included
- The small sizing allows for it to be posted in the mail, as it is both thin and lightweight
- The turn pocket adds a different feature that may contain a message from the artist, photos, vouchers, competitions etc.
CONS
- The template is small in comparison to other digipaks, suggesting it is the anything extraordinary and unique, which may turn customers away.
PROS
- This digipak is slightly more advanced it has move unique it has a corner pocket, which customers may choose to place other cds
- It has a more rectangular shape, which is different to the basic digipak, this may caught the eyes of passers by.
CONS
- Customers may think it is quite a big digipak and may decide against it pushing them to download it
- As it is more advanced it may be more expensive which would turn off customers
DIGIPAK EXAMPLE
An example of a unique and successful Digipak is Demon Day by the Gorillaz.
As downloading is becoming more and more the main source of buying music artists now have to work harder on making their Digipaks more extravagant and appealing for their audiences.
What is unique about the Gorillza Digipak is that it folds in different ways to the usual sideways fold, it folds from all sides and then opens up into a cube revealing a cartoon character on each side. The cartoon character are there is represent each member of the band.
As all of the character head-shots are over a white background it really makes them stand out especially with the fact that they are all have strange facial expressions. This is an unconventional approach as each band member hides behind the face of a cartoon version of themselves, rather than letting everyone become aware of who they really are.
