Evaluation Question 3 - David Brady

THE VIDEO
audience feedback had a huge impact on my video products, due to the audience feedback received my video products were changed completely and were re-structured. for example for my original idea for the video I was going to half narrative and half performance based shots. I received audience feedback when i had all of the performance based shots and half the narrative shots.

Due to this audience feedback i decided that the video plan wasn't fitting the song and the genre. this led me to change the project drastically. I chose a different song by the same artist, 'Late', and to change the idea for the video. instead of having a story or narrative alongside the performance shots i decided to use shots of the band messing around in central London, firstly because this fit the lyrics to the song, and because it was a common theme throughout the indie-rock genre.

This therefore shows the dramatic changes that audience feedback created as it led to the change of the structure of the video as well as key elements such as the style of video, the setting of the video and who was in the video.

When comparing the first audience feedback to the last it is easy to see that there has been an improvement in the product, and that the changes have been made that were needed according to the first feedback. First audience feedback was negative and led to a change in the whole structure of the product whereas the last was complimentary and saw the product as a complete.

THE DIGIPAK
Audience feedback also had a huge impact on the print products, especially the digipak. Like the video the audience feedback of the digipak led to changes in the structure of the project. for example the original idea for the digipak was to have a black and white theme for the cover and the back and then have a colour scheme for the inside panels. however after receiving audience feedback i discovered that the black and white theme wasn't favoured over the colour theme.

This audience feedback led to me changing the cover of the digipak to a colour scheme where the whole digipak had one scheme instead of two. this was an important audience feedback as it allowed me to hear what the target audience preferred and therefore i can target my product for it.

THE ADVERT

Similarly for the magazine advert i got lots of audience feedback but it was more based on the positioning of text and the fonts used. this was important as i didn't want the advert to be overcrowded or too full on, therefore by getting audience feedback i learnt how much text was appropriate for the advert and how much wasn't.

when comparing the first to the last audience feedback for my print products i saw the progression that was made to improve the products. the audience feedback was mainly positive throughout therefore letting me know that the products were appealing to the target audience.

SUMMARY
Audience feedback was a useful tool throughout the construction of my products as it allowed me to get input from those in my target audience, letting me know if i was going away from what they appeal too. this allowed me to make sure that my products were suitable for the target audience and that they were what they expected from the products. Overall the audience feedback has had a huge impact throughout my products leading to lots of change and development, it was a significant in the completion of my products, without it my products wouldn't have ended up in the same form as they are now.

However i could have improved the audience feedback i received by asking more questions, especially about how the target audience expects the products to be marketed. as well as improving by using more social media techniques such as twitter polls to get direct audience feedback from the target audience.

Audience Feedback - Print Products (Group)

Construction Post: Digipak Creation (David)

Products

Method

To create this polarised type digipak I edited the photos we had adding Lightness to the picture which gives the white, misty like look. Then I added the offset and the contrast to further create this look. The white misty look is representative of a polarised photo which is linked to indie and "hipster" look, Which I was going for, as it suits the genre and the look of the band.Furthermore the use of street art I took in London is also linked with the indie genre as it is very plain and simple yet it shows where we are and then links to the video also.

The photos that aren't band group shots or London are scenery shots taken by me also. The photo for the disc is a shot of Hyde park and I used a sunset shot to use as a backdrop for the second lyric book. The sunset photo fits with the feel of the all the photos having a natural and simplistic look.

                 Comparisons

The style of digipak we used can be compared to lots of other indie bands as it is a common theme. However the differences between ours and others is the use of different colours and more natural shots of both the band and the scenery around them. For example Fall Out Boy's "Save Rock and Roll" album, which has a almost polarised style for the front cover which is similar to ours. and the Killers' "Day and Age" album which uses a dot method to give it the same effect as a authentic photo.

Construction Post: Equipment

EQUIPMENT

Throughout the filming process we used lots of new equipment that we had not used before hand, as well as equipment that we were already confident using. These included:

  • Steadicam/flycam
  • GoPro with a wide angle lens with a body strap
  • Canon EOS 650D with a EF/EF-S x1.6 Lens
  • 4 LED Lights
  • 2 lamps with orange and blue filters
  • Canon EOS 1200D with EF/EF-S x1.6 lens

Steadicam / Flycam

The Steadicam/flycam was used throughout the filming process in order to get steady, flowing movement shots and was very useful in both aspects of the music video, in London and the performance shots. When in London the steadicam/flycam was used to generate panning moving shots going around the band, and during the close up of Joe singing was used to create a flowing transition between the London shots and the band shots.

GoPro with a wide angle lens

The GoPro was useful in order to incorporate the band in the filming process, as it is a lot smaller than the DSLR it meant that the band members could hold and walk around with the camera on easily creating a connection between the band and the audience. It also allowed for new types of shots that were impossible to get with out such as using the strap to record when on the bikes, as riding with a DSLR would be impossible to get the same quality of shot.

Another key aspect of the GoPro is that the wide angle lens helps conform to similar videos in the indie genre therefore making the video similar to that of the industry.

Canon EOS 650D with a EF/EF-S x1.6 Lens

The DSLR was the most important camera throughout the filming process as it was the main camera for the filming. During the performance shots the EOS 650D was used along side the 1200D in order to get the different angles, and close ups.

Key features of the 650D is the high quality video that it produced especially in low light, this meant that when filming joe singing with no back lighting the image didn't come out grainy or fuzzy as the IOS was able to be changed to fit the situation. When used with the steadicam it produced clear flowing images.

LED Lights and Lamps

During the performance shots lighting was a key feature as it was used in different ways for each member of the band. for example for the guitars there was an equally balanced lighting from all 3 points; key, back and fill. whereas for Joe as the lead singer there was no back lighting as it only his facial features stand out, this created a more dramatic connection between the audience and the singer. It also put emphasis on the song and the music instead of the background, this is a convention of the indie genre.

The use of 4 LED lights and 2 lamps was vital in order to generate the warm glowing look of the band members, the orange filters used created a warm image, which was more suitable than the cold blue filters as it matches the lyrics of the song. Therefore by using a warm inviting glow to the images it relates to the childishness that the lyrics are talking about.

Canon EOS 1200D with a EF/EF-S x1.6 lens

The EOS 1200D is a slightly less advance camera than the 650D and therefore produces slightly less quality images in terms of video. however the 1200D was vital for the images for the digipak, 4 out of the 6 images on the digipak were taken on the 1200D as it has a better settings for natural images which was the theme of the digipak, therefore making it more useful for these shots than the 650D.

Research: Audience Feedback - Magazine Advert (Group)

Research & Planning: Costume Ideas

Our idea for the band is to be wearing clothes that are typical of the indie genre. this means wearing brands associated with the genre such as thrasher or nike. this allows our band members to appear young and can associate themselves with the fans of the genre. However each band member will be wearing their own style which creates a stylish and modern look for the band.

NEW Animatic (Jodie & Ciara)

Research & Planning: New Idea (Group)

Research & Planning: New Idea (David)

After receiving audience feedback on the rough copy of our music promo for 'Dry'. We found that the idea that we had planned and story-boarded wasn't going to work, and that we had to change our idea. This lead us to use another song by the same artists; 'Late' due to its faster beat and tempo. This meant that we had to restart from the beginning.

After doing the lyric analysis for the song we understood it to be talking about being childish and the transition from adolescences to adulthood. This led us to develop on this idea and we wanted to create a video that looked authentic to the indie genre as well as real for the ages we were portraying. This then led to the idea of having a "self filmed" indie video where the camera would be held by the band and would follow the band on there day out.

The idea was to follow the band around London as they go about messing around and acting childish. We also wanted to add in some lip syncing of the band on this day out but wanted to keep it informal to keep with the connections of an informal self film indie video. We also added another member to the band we were using from the first try, this is because when watching the band shots back we recognized that the lead singer was too busy trying to play bass instead of moving around and being the over the top singer which is the convention of most lead singers in indie bands.

Our real inspirations for the idea of the group messing around on a day out comes from a mixture of indie rock group Blink182's video for 'All the small things'. This childish like behavior is what we tried to capture in our footage.

For the band shots we wanted to make it look authentic to an unsigned band, meaning we used a small recording studio that would be available to such groups, the main inspiration for this type of shots is Artic Monkeys' 'Snap Out Of It' video

Technical: Green Screen

Technical - Green Screen

We decided to learn how to use the green screen in order to expand our knowledge on different editing types and effects, incase we wanted to use a green screen in our thriller opening.

HOW ITS DONE

We first filmed me in front of the green screen with a DSLR camera, then uploaded that footage to the iMac and imported it into Final Cut Pro. We found an image on google images that could serve as the background image, save it, and imported it into final cut pro. We placed the video into the timeline, and placed the image underneath the video layer, then used the keyer tool to remove the green background of the video. There was still small amounts of the background left, so we used the Sample Colour tool to remove the rest of the colour, by selecting a region that had the remaining colour in it.

EVALUATION

Learning how to use the green-screen further developed our skills as media producers, although it wasn't used during our final music video the technical skills that we acquired by learning how to use the green-screen were useful as it gave us the opportunity that we could use the green-screen if we wanted it or needed it. Also learning about how to edit the green screen recording on final cut pro improved our editing skills as it taught us new skills and introduced the different effects that we could use, that we didn't know how to use before.
